How do we assure patient confidentiality?

Patient information is not discussed in public areas such as hallways, elevators, or  the cafeteria.

Patient information is not discussed with other patients or families.

No patient names or diagnoses are placed on the board at the Nursing Station.

Patient confidentiality is considered when discussions or interviews are conducted.

Patient initials are used in case someone might overhear a conversation.

Information given over the phone is limited and given to designated contacts.

All medical records are kept secure.

HEALTH INSURANCE PORTABILITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY ACT – (HIPAA)

HIPAA is a set of Federal Regulations designed to protect patient privacy and confidentiality.  Violation of HIPAA rules can result in civil and/or criminal penalties (fines and/or jail).  

PHI = Protected Health Information

 Includes any information that can potentially identify a patient, whether or not it is publicity available or not.

PHI may be written, verbal or electronic.  PHI may be used for: Treatment, Payment, Operations of the hospital.  

When information must be shared, ONLY the MINIMUM information necessary to do the job is to shared.
